the role of the parent

I stumbled upon this article last week and found myself nodding my head repeatedly while reading. Friedman is spot on in emphasizing how crucial a role parents play in their student’s success. If we are to hold teachers accountable to the performance of their students, as I believe we should, we must also acknowledge the incredible amount of influence parents have in their child’s academic performance. Teachers are a key factor in student achievement, but they are at a severe disadvantage without the help of active and engaged parents. As Friedman writes in his article, “There is nothing more valuable than great classroom instruction. But let’s stop putting the whole burden on teachers. We also need better parents. Better parents can make every teacher more effective.”
